1870s CIVIL WAR VETERAN GAR / GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC MEMBER BADGE TYPE II

Description

Rare and beautiful, 1870's classic Bronze Civil War GAR / Grand Army of the Republic Membership Badge. We believe that this is a very early, Type II Ribbon Badge / Medal and is of the classic 2 piece, flag ribbon form. It measures approx. 3 1/2" long overall and 1 1/4" across at the cast bronze, figural bar pin.
The badge consists of a fancy, cast bronze bar pin in the form of an eagle perched atop crossed cannons. Attached to the upper bar pin via the original, American Flag form, silk ribbon is the 5 pointed star "Medal" of the GAR. This example does not have a serial number stamped on the edge as it was issued before records were kept.
This very attractive GAR Badge is in very good condition. Both the bronze bar pin and the star shaped Medal have wear to the high points of the casting but retain remnants of the original gilt surface in the recesses. The flag form ribbon is original and generally well preserved with no fraying or physical damage but with some soiling and fading as can be seen in the scans below.
