    Description

    1888 MEMORIAL DAY GAR SILK RIBBON WASHINGTON DC LOGAN GUARD 2 ¾” X 7”. John A. Logan
    an American soldier and politician served in the Mexican-American War and was a general in the Union Army in the Civil War. Early in his political career he was a Stephan Douglas democrat but after the war, he resumed his political career as a Republican and was a member of the Congress from 1867 to 1871, and of the US Senate from 1871 until 1877 and again from 1879 until his death in 1886 and was the unsuccessful candidate for Vice President with James Blaine in 1884. In 1868, General Logan as Commander in Chief of the Grand Army of the Republic veteran’s organization, called for a "Decoration Day" to Memorialize veterans and it was widely celebrated. By 1890, every Northern state had adopted it as a holiday.  Logan's body lay in state om 1886 in the
    Capitol.
    He is buried at the US Soldiers’ and Airmen’s Home National Cemetery in Washington D.C.
