Description
Another unusual handmade large sized 1920 postcard which is an invitation to come to a meeting at the NB Forrest Camp of the United Confederate Veterans in Chattanooga, Tennessee . The meeting is to arrange a program for Decoration Day. L.J.Dickinson, Adjutant. The United Confederate Veterans was an American Civil War veterans organization headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was organized June 10,1898 by ex soldiers and sailors of the Confederate States. The UCV was equivalent to the GAR : Grand Army of the Republic. N.B.Forrest was a prominent Confederate Army General during the American Civil War. The postcard was sent to J.H.Latimer who was born in 1843 and died in 1934. He served with Company I of the 49th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War and was active in the UCV after the War. The crudely drawn image on the front appears to be Uncle Sam, France and J.Bull ( possibly England) as three men holding rifles with bayonets. They are attacking a “ man” with Germany written on his jacket. “ She’ll out - to the last nickel - or we are on to Berlin” One of the rules of the UCV : you must be a Southern man to join. The postcard measures approximately 4 x 7 inches. It appears to be in very good condition with minor rounded corners and dirt marks and dirt smudges. At the corners are sl areas of black paper residue as well as sl paper loss in some areas. A sl black stain across the N.B as well .Germany.
