    Description

Another unusual handmade large sized 1922 postcard serving as two invitations. The first is to the Tennessee Division of the United Confederate Veterans at the Courthouse Auditorium. The second is a meeting at the N.B Forrest Camp if the United Confederate Veterans in Chattanooga,Tennessee. To discuss the program for the Decoration day program where the Honorable John R. Neal of Knoxville will be the speaker. They will also be doing preparations for a Reunion At Richmond by L.J.Dickinson Adjutant. The postcard measures approximately 7 x 4 inches. The United Confederate Veterans was an American Civil War veterans organization headquartered in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was organized on June 10, 1889 by ex soldiers and sailors of the Confederate States. N.B.Forrest was a prominent Confederate Army General during the American Civil War. Discussing the Decoration day program as a speaker is Hon. John R.Neal who was a member of the U.T. Law faculty from 1909-1923and gained the reputation of one of the most eccentric figures the University had ever known. He was eventually fired from UT, and also was part of the Scopes Monkey trial. The postcard was sent to J.H.Latimer born 1843 and died 1934. He served with Company I of the 49th Georgia Infantry during the Civil War and was active in the UCV after the war. The postcard has a crude drawing of a woman entering a doorway wearing a sash with Chattanooga on it. The postcard has invitations for three separate events an incredible piece of early Southern history for your collection. The postcard appears to be in very good condition with minor rounded corners and dirt marks and dirt smudges. There a sl creases lower left corner as well as a sl tear at top of the postcard. The rarity of the card certainly overrides any flaws. Sl black paper residue at the corners . John R Neals father John Randolph Neal served in the Civil War as Commander of the 16th Tennessee Cavalry and later became a State Legislator.
