This listing is for a framed chromolithograph Soldier's Memorial for Sgt. John B. Appleby, who served in Battery A of the 1st Battalion, Maryland Volunteer Light Artillery, and at the end of the War in Battery B. Born on 20 May 1840, he enlisted as a Private in Baltimore on 13 September 1861 for a term of 3 years, and until re-enlisting as a Veteran in December 1863, fought in multiple campaigns. During the Peninsular Campaign he was promoted to Corporal (May 23, 1862), and was subsequently with the Battery atSouth Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville.
It missed the Gettysburg Campaign, being sent to Camp Barry and then on July 5, 1863 to Harpers Ferry, where it remained until April of 1864. Appleby opted for discharge on December 31, 1863 so that he could re-enlist for another 3 years (getting leave and a bonus as an incentive) on January 1, 1864--now with the rank of Sergeant. He joined the Battery for multiple campaigns in the Shenandoah Valley in 1864, including the
Battle of New Market
(May 15th), Piedmont (June 5th), occupation of Staunton, Lynchburg, and in operations near Harpers Ferry and the Valley from July 1864 until he was reassigned to Battery B in March 1865. He was honorably discharged in July of that year. After the War Appleby married the former Catherine Miller, relocating to Northampton County, PA, where they had 6 children. He died on 4 March 1909 at the age of 68 and is buried in Saint Johns Cemetery, Bangor, Northampton County, PA.
The Memorial was prepared and "Dedicated to Memory of Comrade Appleby by his widow Catherine and children Charles, Walter, Harry, Laura, Annie & Maizie August 1912.
