    Description

Offered for auction an "ANTIQUE HUDSON RIVER SCHOOL STYLE OIL PAINTING ON BOARD W/CHAMPAGNE GOLD WOOD FRAME"...Overall frame size...41.5" X 21.5" X 1.5" / Painting board size...36" X 16".  This painting depicts a flowing water stream surrounded by landscape and capped mountains in the background (possibly Hudson River School influence).  The matted colors with a touch of light gives the impression of sunset, although the sun is not visible.  This painting is in overall good condition but, shows some sporadic streaked vertical lines especially on the right side of the tall tree, which might require paint touch-up (see photo #3).  There is minor chips on the edges of the board under the frame and minor paint pop on the board surface.  The board is slightly bowed.  This painting is possibly late 19th to early 20th century.  There is no signature or date, as many paintings of this era were unsigned.  This painting is offered "as is" without cleaning or touch-ups.
The frame has been restored (hand painted) with a metallic Champagne Gold paint.  Champagne gold has a softer more subdued appearance than classic yellow gold.  The area surrounding the opening resembles arrowheads in tandem, at least from my prospective.  Photos 10, 11 & 12 shows (before) restoration, with the original worn finish exposing the gesso and red bole covering.  There is a chip to the wood at the bottom edge and normal wear at the corners and edges, although painted.  There is minor age cracks in the gesso, barely noticeable but worthy of disclosure.  The mitered corners are dowel fastened and solid.  The wood on the back has aged oxidation.  The torn paper on the back is also aged and possibly from the early 1900's based on style (speculation).  This frame is in very good condition; it is firm and sturdy.
