    Title:
Authentic Thai Village Glazed Stoneware Pottery, Sawankhalok kiln, Sukhothai Province. 16th C.
Glazed Stoneware Pottery, Sawankhalok kiln, Sukhothai Province.
    Description:
We are pleased to offer this wonderful example of a Stoneware pottery from the historical pottery village of Sawankhalok, in northern Thailand, about 200 miles (320km) north of present day Bangkok. This style of folk pottery made its first appearance during the late Sukhothai period of the fourteenth century, and was prominent in the ceramic trade until the sixteenth century. Influenced by Chinese potters, Thai villagers created not only items of pottery, but also architectual clay elements, and figurines of various types.
Originating from the kilns of Sawankhalok, the pot is beautifully modeled in a simplistic form of globular shape, with flared mouth, a short neck, and flat footrim, ornamented with four evenly placed circular handles resting on a broad shoulder, intended for hanging the vessel by attached cords.
Typical of this particular ware the course clay pot is decorated in a rich brown glaze, draped down the bulbous body, ending short of the base, exposing the natural unglazed clay bisque. The finely fractured "crackled" surface of the glaze is lightly speckled from ash residue deposits penetrating the thickly glazed surface, when fired in a low temperature kiln.
