    Here is a
Civil War Veteran's Widow Pension Request Document.
    The
    pension request
was made to the State of Massachusetts (in
    Boston
    ) by the
    widow of a Union Sailor
    who was on disability.
    He
    served on
    the
    Union Cruiser Congress
    that was
    defeated by
    the
    famous Confederate Ironclad
    , the
    Virginia
    (that had
    been known as the Merrimack
). Congress was shelled into oblivion and burned to the waterline with horrific loss of life,
    120
crew including the commanding officer were
    killed in action
    .  The
    KIAs totaled one quarter
    of the
    480 man crew
. The widow's husband was ostensibly a sailor who was burned, wounded or injured during the battle.  The two had married in 1865.
The document has the original signatures of the
    widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Coombs
age 72 1/2, and the Notary Public, Robert E Lannon.  The couple had lived in Maine for 20 years, the
    Navy Veteran Joseph V Coombs
passed May 24, 1917 in Nassau, New Hampshire (most likely Nashua, NH).  He
had been on a disability pension
.  His wife petitioned the State for
    a month
as she needs to be taken care of and has no means of support nor did she inherit anything of value.   This request was made after the US had entered in to the War with Germany, overlapping two major historical events.
The Civil War Widow Pension request is in aged, worn, about fair condition and is 104 years old.
