    ~ MEASURES 2 1/4" X 4" clean on reverse ~ see scans ~ Mr. Putnam was born in Boston, April 21, 1842, and was 95 years old. He was one of the three surviving members of the Charles H. Stevens post. The two remaining members of the post are Commander Charles F. Staples and Charles Frew of Randolph, Me. Mr. Putnam's family came to Leominster to live when he was seven years old. He enlisted in the Civil war Nov. 13, 1861, with the Massachusetts cavalry and served throughout the war. At the close of the war he saw service in the Indian campaign. He returned to Leominster and in 1869 joined the G.A.R. He served as commander on several occasions and for many years was patriotic instructor of the post. Mr. Putnam was one of the three surviving members of the Massachusetts Cavalry Regimental Association. He was also a member and a past master of Wilder lodge, A. F. and A. M. the Leominster Grange,and the Temple chapter, O. E. S. He was a Republican and cast his first ballot for President Lincoln. He was made an honorary member of the Young Men's Republican club of this city a year ago He was a carpenter and pianomaker and worked in the piano factories here for many years. About 25 years ago he retired from this work and until a few years ago operated a small produce and fruit farm at his home, 288 Highland avenue.
