    Description

Up for auction is a very nice Kalasan sword of the Batak people of North Sumatra. According to van Zonneveld’s classification, this is a Kalasan Hulu Jongo. I’m guessing that Jongo refers to the hilt that is an antler.
This is a very nice sword with a stout blade. The spine is thick as can be seen in the photo. As mentioned the hilt is some sort of antler or horn with an old copper ferrule.
The scabbard has several braided rattan bands. The scabbard , for the most part is wood. The front bottom part of is horn , it is delaminating, probably due to age and handling. There is a section missing, the front part of the scabbards throat. I’m guessing that was made of horn to match the bottom part.
