As one U.S. Marine 'Leatherneck' blasts away with his Combat Shotgun... maybe a Browning, an NCO orders his Flame Thrower Marine to let loose at an enemy pillbox. Tough, reliable... and in the case of the M1 Flame thrower; brutally effective... both the M1 Flame Thrower and the various combat shotguns proved valuable assets to the Marines during the Battle of Tarawa.
Please Note: Images contained in this listing that depict actual U.S. Marines in combat, Maps of Tarawa, U.S. Marine equipment, emblems and U.S. Marine Recruitment Poster or the King & Country Display Diorama are for
DISPLAY AND HISTORICAL PURPOSES ONLY and are NOT PART OR INCLUDED IN THE SALE OF THESE FIGURES

King & Country Battle of Tarawa... Hell in the Pacific:
King & Country and Picacho Peak Collectibles are proud to pay tribute, through the release of the "Bloody Tarawa" series, to the brave Marines who fought and died during the 'Island Hopping' campaigns in the Pacific. The battles that followed these amphibious assault sere among the most intense and brutal combat operations experienced by any of the U.S. armed forces anywhere, anytime in their history.
The bloody cost of victory was also high... almost 20,000 Marines were killed or missing and nearly 70,000 wounded in action between 1941 and 1945. In the war in the Pacific no quarter was asked and seldom was any given... by either side.
Guadalcanal... Tarawa... Okinawa... Iwo Jima are just a few of the many battle honors the U.S.M.C. can claim on their epic campaign journey across the Pacific.
King & Country and Picacho Peak Collectibles are proud to present some of the latest USMC releases to add to the already impressive collection of Marines in action that are currently available. These newest released 'Leathernecks' are well supported by the newest armored vehicle... the mighty M4 Sherman Tank complete with its 75mm main gun and a partially exposed tank commander observing the enemy. Sherman tanks, just like this one, supplied the Marines with much-needed, close quarter fire support as well as providing welcome shelter and cover as the 'Leathernecks' themselves move forward to attack the enemy positions.
All of these ‘
Leathernecks
’ have shed their backpacks and are equipped with a mixture of weapons…
the M1 ‘Garand’ rifle, the M1A1 Thompson Sub-machine Gun, the M1 Carbine, the M1911 Colt Automatic Pistol, the M1918 B.A.R. (Browning Automatic Rifle), a M1 Flame Thrower... and an M1897 Winchester Shot Gun.

HISTORICAL QUOTE
:
"In war there is no second prize for the runner-up."
General Omar N. Bradley
HISTORICAL NOTE
:
'BLOODY TARAWA' THE BATTLE OF TARAWA
The Battle of Tarawa
was fought between 20-23 November 1943 and was part of the U.S. invasion of the
Gilbert Islands
in the central Pacific region.
Although not the first time U.S. forces had met the Japanese in battle, it was the first time they had faced serious opposition to an amphibious landing.
On the tiny
Tarawa Atoll
more than
4,500
J
apanese defenders were well-supplied and expertly dug-in and fought virtually to the last man.
Opposing them were the men of the
2nd Marine Division
,
U.S.M.C.
, some of America’s toughest and best fighting forces.
Of the approximately
12,000 Marines
who assaulted Tarawa
3,146
became casualties with almost
1,000 killed
and over
2,000 wounded.
That was the deadly toll of just
76
hours of bloody, brutal, non-stop combat... against Imperial Japanese forces who would rather die than surrender.

Note: Although we have never been to Pearl Harbor, nor any of the battle sites of the Pacific Theatre, we have visited the stunning U.S.M.C. National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA which is near the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA. In addition, we have also toured All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin P
eninsula
and many of the historical locations, and museums in an around Normandy, we have also visited the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium on several occasions. We have found both the French and the Belgian people, especially in the towns in Normandy and area near Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property to the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
