Today’s Royal Australian Corps of Military Police is a corps within the regular Australian Army. Originally known as the Australian Army Provost Corps it began in WWI and was then (and today) responsible for traffic control, security duties, prisoner handling, investigation of service offenses, maintenance of discipline and running military prisons. It was granted the ‘Royal’ prefix in 1948 and adopted its current name in 1974. During the Vietnam War it was an integral part of the Australian deployment with the first Aussie MP’s arriving in Saigon in mid 1965. Eventually they operated in and around three separate areas, Vung Tau... Nui Dat... and Saigon of course. Among their many duties were: Armed Convoy Escort Collection and Guarding Enemy Prisoners Mobile Patrols and Road Surveillance VIP Escorts TAOR (Tactical Area of Responsibility) patrols checking base perimeter defenses and strong points, and Manning & Operating Road Check Points. These two ‘Digger MP’s are doing just that... As the senior NCO stops traffic, his #2 covers both him and the approaches to the check point with his M16.
The little ‘Check Point’ sign is also included

KING & COUNTRY PRODUCT NOTE
:
'BATTLE OF LONG TAN'
THE BATTLE OF LONG TAN
in August 1966 has gone down in Australian military history as one of their ‘
Finest Hours
’ during the Vietnam War.
‘D’ Company
of the
6
th
Royal Australian Regiment
(
just 106 men
) were patrolling through a rubber plantation not far from their base at
Nui Dat
, South Vietnam when they were confronted by a much larger combined force of North Vietnamese and Viet Cong infantry of about 1,500 strong.
Pinned down and vastly outnumbered the Australians fought courageously and held their defensive perimeter against numerous enemy attacks over many hours.
Accurate long-range artillery fire helped the Aussies hold on while a relief force was readied and eventually reached their beleaguered position.
Australian casualties were
18 killed
and
24 wounded... which amounted to
Australia’s greatest one-day loss during its involvement in the Vietnam War.
Long Tan
is now remembered and honored as a symbol of Aussie military bravery, endurance and teamwork in a very tough battlefield situation.

HISTORICAL NOTE
:
'BATTLE OF LONG TAN' 18 AUGUST 1966
The Battle of Long Tan is the most publicized Australian battle of the Vietnam War. In a decade-long war that, for the most part, consisted of small contacts with an enemy that was reluctant to engage in pitched battles, Long Tan was one of the exceptions.
The catalyst for the battle was the VC (Viet Cong, an abbreviation for Vietnamese Communist) attack on the Australian operational base of Nui Dat, located in the centre of Phuoc Tuy. The attack occurred during the early hours of 17 August 1966, with the VC using mortars and recoilless rifles.
The
Battle of Long Tan
(18 August 1966) took place in a rubber plantation near
Long
Tân, in Phước Tuy Province, South Vietnam, during the Vietnam War. The action was fought between Viet Cong (VC) and People's Army of Vietnam (PAVN) units and elements of the 1st Australian Task Force (1 ATF).
Eighteen Australians
were killed in the Battle of Long Tan
and 24 wounded, all but one of the dead were from D Company.
The
Battle
was a
significant
event, because of the demonstrated fighting ability of Australian soldiers, and the heavy defeat they inflicted on the Viet Cong gorilla fighters.
HISTORICAL REFLECTION
:
EXCERPT FROM KEN BURNS "THE VIETNAM WAR"
America’s involvement in Vietnam began in secrecy. It ended, 30 years later in failure, witnessed by the entire world. It was begun in good faith by decent people out of fateful misunderstandings, American overconfidence, and Cold War miscalculation. And it was prolonged because it seemed easier to muddle through than admit that it had been caused by tragic decisions, made by five American presidents, belonging to both political parties. Before the war was over, more than 58,000 Americans would be dead. At least 250,000 South Vietnamese troops died in the conflict, as well. So did over one million North Vietnamese soldiers and Vietcong guerrillas. Two million civilians, north and south, are thought to have perished, as well as tens of thousands more in the neighboring states of Laos and Cambodia. For many Vietnamese, it was a brutal civil war, for others, the bloody climatic chapter in a century-old struggle for independence. For those Americans who fought in it, and for those who fought against it back home, as well as those who merely glimpsed it on the nightly news, the Vietnam War was a decade of agony, the most divisive period since the American Civil War. Vietnam seemed to call everything into question, the value of honor and gallantry, the qualities of cruelty and mercy, the candor of the American government, and what it means to be a patriot. And those who lived through it have never been able to erase its memory, have never stopped arguing about what really happened, why everything went so badly wrong, who was to blame, and whether it was all worth it.

Note: Although we have never been to either South or North Vietnam, nor any of the battle sites of the Vietnam War, we have visited the stunning U.S.M.C. National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, VA which is near the Marine Corps base in Quantico, VA and of course the stunning Vietnam Wall in Washington D.C. In addition, we have also toured All Five of the Landing Beaches along the Cotentin P
eninsula
and many of the historical locations, and museums in an around Normandy, we have also visited the Bastogne area, including the Baugnez '44 Museum, the site of the Malmedy Massacre, the still existing foxholes of the 502nd and 506th P.I.R. and the pastoral surrounding area in Belgium on several occasions. We have found both the French and the Belgian people, especially in the towns in Normandy and area near Bastogne, to be very friendly and still grateful to the Allies, especially the American forces, for their liberation… despite the huge loss of life and property to the French and Belgian civilians. In addition, should you want to visit the area in and around Normandy or Bastogne, we would be willing to share our experiences or trip itinerary with you, which may help to make your travel through the area easier and perhaps make the historical experience more valuable.
