Passenger ship Great Western
Manufacturer: Orel (Ukraine)
Scale: 1/200
Material: Paper
Condition: New
Type: Passenger Steamer
Series: Civil Fleet
Country: United Kingdom, 1838
Volume: 16 x A4
The ship was the first passenger steamboat designed for transatlantic transport between the ports of Bristol and New York by Great Western Steamship Company. Laid down at the William Patterson Shipyard (Patterson & Mercer) in Bristol. As the first specially built transatlantic steamer, it was the largest of all previously created, had a wooden case, and propeller wheels were used as a propulsion system. In addition, he had four masts. Sails played not only the role of an additional power plant, but also had to serve as a calming motion in the stormy sea, so that the paddle wheels constantly remained in the water.
In the years 1838-1840. he traveled to New York in an average of 16 days, and in the opposite direction in 13 days, 9 hours. In 1842, Great Western was transferred to the Liverpool-New York line. In 1855, the Great Western was requisitioned by the British government for military use. Together with Great Britain and other ships, it was used to transfer troops in the Crimean War. Upon returning to commercial operation, the owners no longer showed interest in Great Western, and at the end of 1856 it was sold for scrap.
We recommend this model to experienced modelers.
