Description
The Daughters of the GAR , NOT the Daughters of Union Veterans, began in Chicago in 1907. It was largely based in Illinois, Michigan & Wisconsin with a few other chapters through the midwest. While they asked for recognition by the GAR, this privilege was denied them. The GAR considered them a splinter broken off from the Daughters of Veterans. Several difference exit: they are the only female organization that claimed male titles for their officers ( Commander, dept. Commander and Commander-in-Chief. This also had a " whites only" membership policy . They disbanded in the late 1960s. More of their history is recorded in Grand Army Women book offered on eBay.This badge is made of 10 kt gold and approximately 8 grams in weight was for the past local chapter or Fortress President. It is being sold as a historic artifact rather than scrap gold value. Because the organization was regional in basis, all of their badges are extremely rare to see or to be offered for sale.
