    Description

    Great cabinet card photo of Henry Clay Thompson and presumably his wife Catherine, with
    Salem, Indiana photographer’s mark. Has “H.C. Thompson Born March 6 th 1836 Enlisted in Co.
    B 16 th Ind Infty July 21 st 1862. Discharged June 30 1865“ on reverse in period ink. Thompson
    wears a “Company B 16 th Ind. Vol. Infantry” ribbon. Thompson died on September 6, 1911 and
    is buried in Salem.
    The 16 th Indiana was rushed into service and captured at the Battle of Richmond, Kentucky, in
    August 1862. After being exchanged, the regiment fought at Arkansas Post, through the
    Vicksburg Campaign, the Red River Campaign, and various other actions in Louisiana.
