Presidential Military Commission Certificate - President Andrew Johnson - Daniel W. Walcott, Appointment to Second Lieutenant, 1st U.S. Cavalry Regiment dated April 23, 1866. Has signatures of Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War and President Andrew Johnson, who assumed the office upon the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln.Commission has original Blue Presidential Seal. It has been folded and has significant foxing on the parchment. Please see all photographs as they are part of the auction description. Auction also includes a reprint 6 "x 4" photograph of the 1st Cavalry Regiment during the Civil War, a brief history of the Civil War service of the 1st U.S. Cavalry Regiment and personal history of Daniel W. Daniel W. Walcott ( 1834-1906 )
Enlisted in Boston, Mass in October, 1861 and mustered in as a Private, Company K, 1st U. S. Cavalry in November. He reenlisted in February, 1864 as a 1st Sergeant and was later discharged in March, 1865 to accept a commission as a Second lieutenant, in Company H, 1st U. S. Cavalry and was posted to Fort Mason, Arizona. Walcott served in the 1st U. S. Cavalry until his discharge as a First Lieutenant in August, 1869.
