The following item is an authentic Civil War pensioner's check from 1873. The U.S. Pension Agent was John L. Barstow of The State of Vermont. Barstow was commissioned adjutant of The 8th Vermont Infantry in 1862 and was subsequently made Major in 1864. In 1864 Major Barstow was sent to Canada to find and capture The St. Alban's Raiders, a group of Confederate Guerrillas who robbed banks in Vermont leaving at least one man dead. They eventually fled to Canada. Major Barstow as sent on special assignment to tack them down and capture them. This check is in very good condition with only a small hole in the cancellation area. This check is made out to JohnL'heureux
