    Description

U.S. Civil War Model 1832 Artillery Sword used by a G.A.R. Group
This is an original U.S. Civil War Model 1832 Artillery Sword that was chrome plated. These types of modifications were made by members of the G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic). The sword was brought home after the war and was used for G.A.R. for events and parades. The sword came out of a grouping belonging to John H. Simpson that we sold over a year ago. The grouping consists of a Fedora style hat with a G.AR. Wreath and No. 194 Post #.
An off white leather G.A.R. Belt and Buckle and a photo of Mr. Simpson wearing the hat. Mr. Simpson was a resident of South Reading Mass. and an 18 year of Shoemaker when he enlisted on 12/5/1863 as a Private. On 12/8/1863 he mustered into “D” Co. Mass. 1
    st
Battn Heavy Artillery and was mustered out on 9/12/1865. He was a member of G.A.R. Post 194 in Reading Mass. The sword is in very nice plus condition as is the leather scabbard. There are no markings on the sword. Most likely they were removed when the sword was plated.
