    Description

    Southern Cross Of Honor--Crankshaw Marked
Original circa 1900-1904 United Daughters of the Confederacy/United Confederate Veterans Southern Cross Of Honor, bronze finish copper construction composed of bar with screw post and threaded button type washer, and Maltese cross pendant with flag, wreath, CSA motto, and dates 1861-1865. Back of bar is marked CHARLES CRANKSHAW/ATLANTA/PATENTED. Crankshaw was an Atlanta jeweler and had the initial contract for the Cross. The medals were actually made by Schwaab of Milwaukee and distributed by Crankshaw beginning in 1900. Following a dispute with the manufacturer, Schwaab, their contract was revoked and production awarded to Whitehead and Hoag of Newark, N.J., beginning in 1904.
Average age tarnish but no oxidation or other damage. Probably the biggest drawback to the medal is that it is not named on the bar. Still a nice early example of this medal, came out of an old family estate in Mineola, Texas and is in very good condition. Any questions please feel free to ask.
