    The Polacca first appeared in the Mediterranean Sea at the beginning of the 18th century. As an escort ship or as a merchantman, the Polacca was a popular choice in the Venetian Fleet, where it was used to protect shipping routes. At the time the Adriatic Sea was rife with Dalmatian, Greek, and Turkish pirates.
