Description

This Ba' or baby carrier was used by the Dayak Tribe in Kalimantan, Indonesia. Kalimantan is an area of the island of Borneo. The Sarawak area, also in Borneo, is Malaysian. This particular ba' could possibly be from part of the Malaysian area of Borneo and is approximately from mid 20th century or earlier. It was handmade of woven rattan and carved wood, several beads, a metal hammered face decoration and shell. I believe the orange beads are amber and the white small skull is carved from wild boar teeth. I especially like that fact that this ba' is plain and used by the more poor people in the area. The beads and face were used to ward off any evil spirits surrounding the baby. The simplicity is beautiful.
